And wow, the AI scene really picked up steam in 2023, didn’t it? Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon, Nvidia, and so many other tech giants jumped on the AI bandwagon with their own tools and chatbots. It’s amazing how AI has made waves not just in the tech industry but also in healthcare, education, and even Hollywood.

January: Microsoft and OpenAI agree to years-long alliance

In January, Microsoft made a whopping $10 billion investment in OpenAI. They had big plans, including developing supercomputing systems, building their own services using OpenAI’s technology, and creating tools to empower developers to build their own AI applications. And speaking of AI, ChatGPT really took off that month, didn’t it? Its user base grew by a staggering 131%, going from 266 million to 616 million users.

That’s incredible growth! On another note, it’s fascinating to hear about the collaboration between MIT researchers and Mass General Hospital. Their deep-learning model for assessing lung cancer risk based on CT scans sounds like a promising advancement in healthcare. AI is making impressive strides in various fields!

February: Google and Microsoft race to announce their own AI-powered tools

In February, Google introduced its own conversational AI chatbot called Bard. It’s interesting how the timing of Google’s announcement seemed suspicious, especially with Microsoft planning to unveil Bing just a day later.

I can understand why some Google employees expressed concerns about the timing, describing it as “rushed” and “un-Googley.” It must have been a month of intense pressure for many tech companies as they rushed to create alternatives to ChatGPT, which was dominating the OpenAI landscape. March: GPT-4 is released … along with a million other AI tools

March was definitely a busy month, It seemed like every company was jumping on the AI bandwagon. Ford, for example, introduced Latitude OpenAI to speed up the development of their self-driving technology.

A few standouts:

  • Adobe introduced Firefly, an AI-backed image-generating and editing tool.
  • Canva launched its own AI-powered virtual Design Assistants and Brand Managers.

But you know, some people had concerns that companies were rushing to release AI capabilities without considering the potential consequences. And unfortunately, there was a bit of a setback when Microsoft decided to let go of the team responsible for ensuring responsible development and deployment of AI tools. It’s important to find the right balance, right? On a brighter note, in the healthcare industry, UBC researchers made a remarkable breakthrough by creating an AI system that can predict cancer patient survival rates by analyzing doctors’ notes. It’s incredible how OpenAI is making a positive impact in different fields!

April: Amazon joins the fun

Amazon made a big announcement with Bedrock, allowing AWS customers to build their own apps on top of generative AI models and customize them with their own data. It’s exciting to see companies embracing the power of AI in different ways. And speaking of chatbots, it seems like everyone was jumping on the chatbot bandwagon in April! Expedia, Binance, and even Sberbank (Russia’s version of ChatGPT) all hopped on board.

It’s interesting to see how companies are incorporating OpenAI into their services. TikTok also joined the AI club by introducing their own AI tool for creating profile photos. Although, I have to admit, sometimes the results can be a bit creepy, right? Lastly, it’s unfortunate to hear about Samsung’s sensitive data being leaked to ChatGPT. It’s no wonder businesses are now putting restrictions on how their employees can use it. Privacy and security are definitely important considerations.

Google made some major moves by opening up its Bard chatbot to the public. It’s always cool to see these advanced AI technologies becoming more accessible to everyone. And speaking of Google, they also announced their new Search Generative Experience (SGE), although it’s currently limited access. This is a game-changer for how users will find information and interact with search results.

On the AI front, things relaxed down as beach season arrived. Some of the month’s biggest announcements was the release of Apple’s Vision Pro, an augmented reality headset driven by artificial intelligence.

Another significant advancement in healthcare and AI was made by researchers at The University of Edinburgh who used OpenAI algorithms to find potent anti-aging medications.

July: Microsoft announces enterprise version of Bing Chat

In July, Microsoft made some exciting announcements. They introduced Bing Chat Enterprise, which allows users to use Bing Chat without worrying about their confidential data being exposed on the open web. It’s great to see companies taking privacy seriously after the Samsung scandal.

OpenAI CEO fired in November. Then, rehired

OpenAI’s rollercoaster ride continued with unexpected turns and twists in November. Then, Microsoft hired Altman to head their OpenAI Research Unit after firing him as CEO of OpenAI. The story does not end here! OpenAI decided then to bring Altman, as well as a brand new board of director back into the fold. What a week it was!
